Mary Porter Brooks Kennedy
Murphy Funeral Home
Martin, Tennessee
Mary Porter Brooks Kennedy died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the home of her daughter. She was 87 and had been living alone at home since the death of her husband in 1981 until just the last few months. Porter had been a housewife all of her married life.
Porter was born July 31, 1918, just outside Martin. She always hated middle names for girls because that meant they would have four names when they married. She married Larry Milner Kennedy, who was from the Stella Ruth community just outside Martin, on May 20, 1936, the same day she graduated from high school. She always said she did not want to have to get dressed up more than once so it was easier to graduate and marry on the same day.
They had two children, Brooks and LaRee. While she never worked outside the home, she volunteered in the schools while her children were in school and then later in life at the local hospital. She and her husband were very generous to many Tennessee Martin college students who either stayed in their home or in the apartment behind their home. She was a member of the Bethel Church of Christ.
Porter is survived by her children Brooks Kennedy of Fort Worth and LaRee Brewer and husband Steve of Martin; four grandchildren, Darin Kennedy and wife Kimberly and Derek Kennedy and wife Carrie, Brad Brewer and wife Lindsey, and Andy Brewer and wife Kristy; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Daniel Kennedy.
Porter was preceded in death by her husband Larry Kennedy, her parents James Luther and Jesse Crawford Brooks, a brother Crawford Brooks, and a sister Helen Beale.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 13, at Murphy Funeral Home with burial in East Side Cemetery in Martin.
